Recently the South East correspondent for RTE, Damien Tiernan, visited the school and gave a speech to the TY students about what being a journalist means in modern society. He also outlined what is needed in terms of qualifications etc. in order to become a journalist but stressed that the first requirement is to be curious and inquisitive as well as fact checking ones sources in order to ensure accuracy of information. In an increasingly diverse and instantaneous media environment this is ever more necessary and important. He also encouraged the TY's to consider a career in journalism stating that his own career started with a simple report of a school sports game in his native Wicklow and from there it progressed to local radio and then to the national broadcaster and to television. |
